Carry-On Or Checked Luggage?

My perfect carry-on is the American Tourister expandable hardside luggage with spinner wheels.

The answer to what is the best suitcase really depends on many variables, from your packing personality to the length of your getaway, and the $100 million dollar question: carry-on or check?

If your preference is a carry-on, then be sure to check the carry-on bag size restrictions of your particular airline. Generally speaking, your carry-on bag should fit in the overhead bin. The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 centimeters x 35 centimeters x 56 centimeters). This includes handles and wheels.

My personal favorite carry-on bag is the American Tourister (pictured above). While my usual preference is soft-sided luggage, this carry-on really works well for short getaways and to fill with necessary items on longer flights. It’s pretty, durability and the inside compartments (zipped on one size, the other buckled) are amazing!

My second piece of carry-on as a personal item is a backpack, for my computer and camera, but for those not needing that equipment, consider a duffle bag, which can double as your beach bag.

For those who aren’t frugal packers (and you know who you are!), then I’d still suggest a carry-on, to include contents listed below. Pack at least a change of clothes for a couple of days. Just in case your checked baggage decides to take a detour and arrive later.

It may seem a no-brainer for your basic packing list, but don't forget to bring your passport!

Seriously, you would be surprised how many people forget their passport at the last minute!

Yes, another no brainer to include your cell phone on the basic packing list, but not only the phone but also your chargers and any adapters you may require.

Currency and Credit Cards

International travel checklist should include checking with your bank, credit cards and exchanging some cash into foreign currency.

Sure it’s convenient, but don’t use the ATM or exchange foreign currency at the airport or hotel. Make arrangements with your bank in advance and save money.

Travel Insurance Policy

Consider travel insurance when you international vacation includes adventures like 4-wheeling in Israel down to the Dead Sea.

Not only should you purchase travel insurance, but pack the travel insurance policy information in your carry-on bag — NOT in your checked bag. Again, just in case your suitcase goes astray!

Whether you’re going for a few romantic days in Paris or exploring the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, you need to make sure you’re protected in case of an emergency. Even if your airplane gets canceled or there is an error with your hotel, you should make sure that you’re covered by travel insurance.

Lip Salve

Air travel drys your skin out super easily and it’s good to keep them hydrated as often as you can.

Moisturiser and Lotion

Also essential for your carry on is a moisturizer and lotion to keep your skin happy. Drop these in a quart-sized bag and remember these are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

Also, remember drinking plenty of water also helps lots!

Comfy Socks

Pack spare comfy socks for the plane. Flight socks can be good for added circulatory boost and it’s generally good for your health to wear them. For me, my feet are always cold, so warm socks keep me comfortable.

Entertainment for the Plane

The one thing I love about flying is the opportunity to snuggle in and read a good book. Add your Amazon Fire to your basic packing list, as it’s better than trekking heavy books around with you. Although I have a confession. I’m one of those who will still occasionally packs the book I’m currently reading and just leave it at the airport as a gift to the next traveler.

Playing cards – to pass the time in between the tea order and landing at your destination!

Consider the Weather

Above all, though you need to have some good clothing to pop into your case, and keeping on top of the weather and any travel information about the country that you’re traveling to which may include weather warnings, health information and such.

Pack a Quality Coat

There’s no pressure, however, it’s important to remember that your coat isn’t something you can simply sling on your hosts’ bed when you arrive at your destination. You have probably already checked the weather at your destination, so the most important thing is that you want to be comfy. Look at packing a raincoat also! You never know when you will get caught out and if you have a hood on the jacket you won’t have to think about packing an umbrella at least±

Protect from the Sun

It may be spring, but that winter sun is still super strong. Packing a good pair of sunglasses is an important thing even in the colder months. The sun can still be blinding and damaging, so be sure to look fashionable. They are a must when you’re packing your suitcase, no matter the climate you’re traveling to or where your next destination may be, keeping your eyes healthy is vital!
