What to Pack for Your First Ski Trip

Skiing is one of those winter activities that few people try because of the conditions it requires. If you live somewhere near the mountains (such as Colorado or Canada), then embarking on a ski trip is part of the culture. But if you live in a place like Texas, then you’ll probably only ever skied indoors.

Whether you’re planning a snowy holiday this year or just want to take a break to experience the adventure of winter skiing, here are some tips on what to pack for your first ski trip.

Ski Gear and Clothes

Many people actually overlook the importance of investing in some equipment for a trip. This is usually because they just assume that they can get the necessary skiing gear when they arrive at the resort. However, you’ll typically want to purchase gear beforehand so that you can ensure that it’s the right fit. After all, you don’t want to spend more money on new equipment and you also probably don’t want to put on used gear.

We suggest that you start with the basics like snow goggles and warm base layers that will help protect you when you’re on the slopes. If you tend to feel cold as soon as the temperature drops a bit, then base layers and mid-layers combined will help you immensely. If you’re not sure how well you handle the cold, then consider bringing some extra layers just in case.

For equipment such as ski poles and boots, we suggest that you first rent equipment at the resort and then consider buying it later. If you’ve been skiing before (such as an indoor venue) then use that experience to help you decide if you should buy your own set of gear or not. Some resorts even let you book in advance for equipment to lower the costs.

We’ve mentioned winter clothing above, but we thought it’d be a good idea to elaborate a little. In general, you’ll want to wear something that is both warm and can keep you dry, especially if you’re engaging in physical activity.

A few basics like a ski jacket and some heavy boots are a good start. While ski pants might not seem important, choose some that sport a few pockets to store random items while also being comfortable enough to wear while skiing. Remember you’ll probably be moving your legs a lot, so don’t underestimate the importance of flexible pants!

Lastly, don’t forget mittens or gloves to help keep your hands warm — and these ANDORRA Women’s Waterproof Touchscreen Ski Gloves are perfect! This is especially important when you’re on the slopes because gripping onto your poles is going to be extremely difficult (and painful at times) if your hands aren’t protected. Keep them warm and you’ll have a much more enjoyable time skiing.
