For many of us, we are ever-so-slowly stretching our wings and eyeing international travel again. Yet, we still remain cautious, checking on the COVID cases, vaccination, and quarantine rules and mandates. Yes, it’s important to do your research, but there are also potential other dangers. To keep safe from these, read on for our simple international travel safety tips.
Do not Draw Attention to Yourself
People who look as if they are from out of town tend to be more vulnerable to crime. It is a good idea for you to try and blend in as much as possible. You need to try and choose somewhat inconspicuous clothing that will not attract any attention. You also need to be discreet when you check maps and when you choose to approach people for directions. If you do not know where you are going then this will highlight the fact that you are a tourist, and it will make you way more vulnerable. Wearing protective clothing or gear will make it harder for pickpockets to target you, so keep this in mind too.
Make Copies of your Documents
You truly never know when you might need a copy of your driving license, your passport, or any other form of identification. Scan your documents and save them. You also need to take several hard copies with you as well.
You never know when your baggage is going to get lost or when you are going to need to get an extra copy, so try and make sure that you anticipate this need as much as possible.
Keep your Friends Updated
It doesn’t matter where you are going, or how long for. You always need to make sure that your friends and family are aware of your travel plans. If possible, send them of your plans, so that your friends and family at home can check your whereabouts.
Check-in on a regular basis with your friends and family to assure them you are safe. If you do this, then if for some reason you don’t check in when expected, they can alert the authorities and you can drastically improve your safety.
If your plans include experiencing a night out with cocktails at the clubs in the area then this is fine, but update the hotel staff when you leave. This is a great way for them to be aware of where you are and if you should require assistance.
If you, however, you feel as though your drinking is an issue, then now would be the time for you to explore the idea of attending one of the many rehab centers in the world.
Don’t Use Public WiFi
Sure, public Wi-Fi looks convenient and while most of the time it is safe, you need to be mindful of hackers.
Sometimes hackers use public WiFi connections to steal credit card numbers or even social security numbers.
If you do need to access the internet and you know that you are going to be entering sensitive information, such as your credit card information, then set up a VPN so you can stay secure as much as possible.
