Some people see vacation as the ideal time to kick back and do a whole load of nothing. Ahh, to sit on a sun lounger and soak up the sounds of the sea. Or not. For some of us, the idea of doing nothing on holiday is hellish. Instead, we opt to stay active while traveling. What better way to experience a country than by keeping energy levels high? In fact, you could argue that sitting around is a waste of the money you spent getting there. You can do nothing at home, right?

The good news is, there are a variety of ways to keep active. You could either practice your regular exercises or submit yourself to a sporting holiday. There certainly won’t be any excuse for downtime during one of these. If you’ve never tried before, rest easy that holidays like these have something for everyone. From water sport to cycling; you’ll be spoiled for choice.

And when the snow files, avid skiers take to the slopes. If you’re one of those who’ve always wanted to go on a ski holiday, read on for these ski tips for the first timer.

What the First Time Skiier Needs to Know

The Right Location

As with any vacation, the location has a significant impact on enjoyment. First, consider which country you would like to head for. The French Alps are probably the most iconic skiing location, so it might be worth starting there.

Then, it’s time to narrow things down. Various sites are worth your attention, like Meribel and Courchevel. And, each has a myriad of options.

Keep your skill set in mind and turn to something like this best guide to skiing in Meribel to give you some idea of where to head.

You can find similar guides to any ski vacation destination you can imagine, so do your research. If it’s your first time, look out for resorts which offer beginner courses, and smaller slopes.

The Right Gear

Next on the list should be your ski gear. For a first trip, it’s worth renting anything possible from your destination. For the most part, you should be able to rent helmets, ski poles, boots, and your skis. That way, you can test the waters before spending a lot.

Bear in mind that you will need to stock up on neck warmers, thermals, and warm ski gloves to keep you warm.

And, don’t forget to invest in a decent pair of ski goggles to shield your eyes!

The Right Attitude (in the Right Altitude)

Once you’ve picked the right location, as with anything new, your attitude will dictate your success. Make sure to hit the slopes with the right mindset. (And if you are bringing little ones, here are tips for putting kids in ski school.)

Set yourself daily achievement goals, and throw your efforts into the task. If you’re on a ski vacation, you can’t afford to tiptoe down that mountain. Throw yourself down the slope, and into the holiday.

Traveling is, after all, about exposing yourself to the unknown!
