After all, amid the chaos of everyday life, we rarely get to enjoy more than a few minutes of our own company. In addition to giving you the chance to reconnect with this part of yourself, you can also decide exactly what you do and when. This means no more waiting around for that friend who takes forever to get ready, or no more queuing for attractions that you don’t really want to see.

With that in mind, here are some practical tips for planning your first solo trip.

Start simple.

While you may be used to planning multi-destination trips, such as road trips, it’s best to start simple for your first solo adventure. Focus instead on a single destination, so that you only have to worry about getting from A to B. Make sure that you’ll have plenty of things to do there beforehand (unless, of course, you plan to do nothing but sit by the pool).

Take out travel insurance.

Regardless of your plans while abroad, make sure that you take out travel insurance from a company such as Generali ahead of time. This will provide you with a greater sense of security ahead of time, as you know that you’re well protected should something go wrong during your trip. Remember, traveling without insurance means that you’d have to pay out of pocket in an emergency.

Between flights, accommodation, and keeping yourself busy, solo travel can get quite expensive. However, you can cut the costs quite considerably by traveling off-peak. If you’re heading on a poolside vacation, this comes with the added benefit of always having a sunbed available and not being surrounded by screaming children!

Participate in group activities.

Sometimes traveling solo is awesome; other times traveling with girlfriends is just what you need, such as my bucket list journey to China.

While part of the joy of solo traveling is not having to deal with others, group activities can be a lot of fun. This is because they can help to keep feelings of loneliness at bay, while also giving you the chance to make new friends. Remember, there are group activities out there that can cater to all tastes and interests, from wine tastings to hikes!

Shop around for the best deal.

Shopping around for the best deal on everything from flight tickets to accommodation is a great way to make the most of your first solo trip. This is because it can help you to avoid worrying about money while traveling, while also allowing you to stretch your budget that much further. This means that you’ll be able to pack as much fun and excitement into your trip as possible. There are many steps that you can take to make your first solo trip as fun, memorable, and safe as possible. If you’ve been looking for a sign to take the leap and travel solo, let this be it.
