Often overshadowed by flashier coastal destinations or mountain ranges, Ohio might not be the first state that springs to mind when planning your next getaway. However, for those willing to look a little closer, the “Buckeye State” quietly boasts a surprising wealth of attractions and experiences, proving itself to be a genuinely diverse and welcoming destination.

From its pivotal role in American history and groundbreaking innovations to its vibrant urban centers, stunning natural landscapes, and quirky local charm, read on for compelling reasons to visit Ohio and experience its heartland allure.

Exciting Festivals

Festivals are a big deal in Ohio. The state’s biggest festival, the Ohio State Fair, is held every July in Columbus and is one of the biggest festivals in the US, sporting food, music, rides, and a range of other attractions. There’s also Cincinnati Music Festival – an annual festival dedicated to jazz, R&B, soul, and hip hop. In addition to this, there are individual food festivals dedicated to apples, pumpkins, sauerkraut, and even a festival devoted to popcorn, held at various points throughout the year.

Aviation history

The inventors of the first airplane, the Wright Brothers, both hailed from Dayton, Ohio. Although the first flying machine is now in a museum in Washington, DC, many memorials to the Wright Brothers can be found throughout Dayton. Dayton has become a hotspot for aviation enthusiasts from around the world, largely because it is home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. This museum is the oldest and largest aviation museum in the world, and contains hundreds of different types of aircraft on display.

Ohio boasts some incredible natural beauty. Its most visited national park is Hocking Hills State Park, where you can find 25 miles of scenic hiking trails. These trails pass by rock formations, waterfalls, and recessed caves. There are many lodges, treehouse cabins, and campgrounds that you can stay at in this national park if you’re craving an escape into the wilderness.

Fantastic fishing

Are you a fan of fishing? Ohio is a top fishing destination thanks to its abundant freshwater supplies. Lake Erie and the Ohio River attract the most anglers and contain a diverse array of fish. If you own an RV, this campground on the Ohio River could be a great choice, providing convenient access to fishing spots throughout East Fork State Park. There are also lodges overlooking Lake Erie that allow you to fish from your own private deck.

Brilliant breweries

If you love beer, you’ll also love the craft beer scene in Ohio. Over 300 breweries can be found throughout the state – including the world famous Great Lakes Brewing Company. Many of these breweries offer tours and tastings. A large number of them are also surprisingly family-friendly – providing restaurants with kids menus, activities like duckpin bowling and even playgrounds.

All in all, Ohio is a great state to visit if you love festivals, airplanes, hiking, fishing or beer. And that’s just some of the more overlooked reasons to visit Ohio – there’s also the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Cedar Park Amusement Park and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Many of the state’s attractions are open all year round. However, if you want to increase the chance of good weather, plan to visit in summer.
