On the road again…this time to Canon City, Colorado. Its first territorial prison was built in 1871, followed by 12 additional state and federal prisons making Canon City the Corrections Capital of Colorado.
Welcome to Cañon City, Colorado, (pronounced Canyon) home of the world-famous Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. Located in the Pikes Peak region, the area offers a variety of outdoor activities for the entire family year round including some of the best fly fishing in the U.S.
Cañon City also offers shopping in the Historic Downtown, a taste experience at the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. And experience the history of the Pikes Peak area by road trip via the Gold Belt Byway or take a drive to the top with the panoramic view of Skyline Drive.
We planned a visit to these 3 Canon City attractions:
1. Winery at Holy Cross Abbey
Located on the pastoral & serene grounds the Abbey is nestled against the spectacular backdrop of the Wet Mountains in the heart of Canon City. The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey has won over 100 awards and medals in prestigious international wine competitions in the last three years. The tasting room is open daily, and the gracious staff will guide you through a flight tasting of multi-award winning wines. Most are complimentary, while the reserve wines cost $1.00 to taste. You can also enjoy a VIP wine and cheese tasting in the park or on the tasting room terrace, for $25.00 per person.
2. Royal Gorge Route Railroad
3. Royal Gorge Bridge & Park
This too was one of my first family adventures, years back when my now adult kids were just babies. We plan on visiting the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, test out the zipline, ride the coaster and walk across the bridge.
We will be staying at a VBRO, Home Away vacation rental, my first experience vacation rental experience. The picture of our “home away from home” are inviting. What do you think?
Stay tuned for details of our road trip to Canon City, Colorado.
